Artificial is something that is not natural. the term can signify something that is "false", or a substitute for the real thing. For example, artificial turf and artificial sweeteners aren't natural in origin, and are made by humans.
The terms original sense may be related to artifact and artifice, and may refer to a product of human endeavor.[citation needed]
