British Arctic Territories

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

British Arctic Territories was a territory in North America, consisting of the islands of what is now Canada's high arctic.

The British claim to the area was based on the discoveries of Martin Frobisher (1535–1594) in the 16th century. Britain passed control of the islands to Canada in 1880.

  • North-West Territory
  • Rupert's Land

These territories, which were historically corporate colonies, later became Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, northern Ontario, Northwest Territories, Yukon Territory, Nunavut Territory, northern Quebec, and the mostly northerly insular and mainland portions of what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Some of the northern and north-easterly portions of British Columbia were also within the North-West Territory, but most of the British Columbia mainland and all of Vancouver Island were colonized separately from the arctic territories, and subject to joint U.S./U.K. ownership as part of the Oregon Country, 1818-1846.
