An illustration of a dresser.

A dresser is a piece of furniture which is similar to a sideboard, but also has shelves above for storing and displaying crockery. Traditionally, a dresser is located in the kitchen and used for "dressing" meat. The design sometimes varied from that in the picture by having one or two drawers above the opening doors in the base. On larger estates and properties, one of these drawers (if two) very often had a tin lining and was referred to as a 'porage drawer'into which freshly made porage was emtied and left to cool. When cold, slices of the porage were cut out and given to the 'estate' manual workers for breakfast. A bedroom chest of drawers is often called a "dresser."
