Alataw Pass
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alataw Pass, or Alashankou (Chinese: 阿拉山口; pinyin: Ālāshānkǒu) is a mountain pass in the border of China (Börtala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang) and Kazakhstan (Almaty Province). It is also known as the Dzungarian Gate. See "Lake Alakol" article for more geography of the area.
It is the westernmost point of north Xinjiang branch of the Lanzhou–Xinjiang railway.
It is a port of entry with both railroads and roads linking China with Kazakhstan; it is also one of China's national first-class ports of entry. The volume of imports and exports passing through Alashankou accounts for 90% of the total for all of Xinjiang, and is second to only Manzhouli, Inner Mongolia among land ports-of-entry in China.
