Excision

Excision means "to remove by cutting".

  • In surgery, an excision (also known as a resection) is the complete removal of an organ, tissue, or tumor from a body, as opposed to a biopsy. An "excisional biopsy" (sometimes called a "tumorectomy") is the removal of a tumor with a minimum of healthy tissue. It is therefore an excision rather than a biopsy.
  • It is a term used by the Australian government as part of its definition of the Australian migration zone.
  • The Excision theorem is an important theorem in Algebraic topology, a branch of Mathematics.
  • Grammatically, the noun excision derives from the verb excise; excise tax is used to describe taxes charged on the purchase of goods or services.
