Grover Underwood is a fictional character in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians stories. He is a satyr, a mythological Greek being that is half goat and half human. He has the upper body of a human and the legs and horns of a goat. His horns are usually hidden by his curly brown hair (although they do eventually grow too tall for him to hide them) or sometimes an orange rasta cap. Although he is 32, he is the equivalent of a sixteen year-old human because satyrs mature half as fast as humans do. Grover is set to be played by Brandon T. Jackson in the upcoming movie Percy Jackson, a film adaptation of the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief.

[edit] Background

Grover is the best friend of Percy Jackson, with whom he has an empathy link, meaning if one of the two dies, the other will probably die, too (or permanently left in a vegetative state).

Grover is shown to be a bit cowardly, getting afraid easily. When this happens, his eyes turn to slits like a goat's. But he always tries to defend his friends and is very loyal. He also can cope with dangerous situations fairly well (like when he was kidnapped by the Cyclops, Polyphemus).

Being a satyr, Grover loves nature very much and hates pollution and hunters. In the third book, it is revealed he has a huge crush on Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. He comments, "She's so...into nature." Grover's girlfriend is a nymph named Juniper. They are first shown together in The Battle of the Labyrinth. Strangely, he once had a crush on a blueberry bush, and often helps out animals. At the end of the first book, Grover sets off to find Pan, God of nature who disappeared centuries ago. All satyrs believe he is still alive, and wish to bring him back to restore nature to the way it was.

In The Titan's Curse, Grover is involved in several situations where Pan, god of the Wild, speaks to him. The first was in New Mexico, where the presence of Pan made the birds on Grover's coffee cup and a rubber rat come to life, also bringing a giant wild boar to help Percy, Thalia, him, Bianca and Zoe escape the skeletal army. The second incident happened when Grover was alone. Pan spoke to him, saying, "I await you." Both times, Grover was drinking coffee, so he and the other satyrs believe, to Percy's disbelief, that this had something to do with Pan's appearance.

[edit] In the books

[edit] The Lightning Thief

Grover goes undercover in Yancy Academy as a disabled student in order to discover if there are any half-bloods who attend it. There he discovered Percy Jackson, who he suspects is a half-blood and alerts Mr. Brunner (the Latin teacher) who turns out to later be Chiron, Camp Half-Bloods activities director. Grover reveals his satyr form to Percy when the Jacksons (Percy and his mother, Sally Jackson) go to a beach house in Montauk. He accompanies Percy along with Annabeth Chase on a quest to the Underworld to retrieve Zeus's stolen Master Lightning Bolt.

[edit] The Sea of Monsters

Due to the empathy link he established, Grover is able to communicate with Percy from a far distance. In his dreams, Percy sees how Grover is trapped by Polyphemus, the blind cyclops that once held Odysseus captive, and is about to meet the same gruesome ending as all satyrs before him, including his father, who went searching for Pan. Along with Annabeth and Tyson, the half-brother Cyclops of Percy, Percy journeys on an unapproved quest to find Grover. At the end, the Golden Fleece [a powerful healing item] releases Thalia's spirit from the pine tree that kept her spirit.

[edit] The Titan's Curse

Grover is undercover once again, this time at a military school, where he discovers two children, Nico and Bianca di Angelo, that he suspects are half-bloods. In the excitement of his discovery, Grover asks Percy to come and help him to safely bring the half-bloods to camp half-blood. In the process of trying to get to the di Angelos, a manticore (Dr. Thorn) kidnaps Percy, Bianca, and Nico, only to lose them to Thalia, Annabeth, and Grover. As they battle Dr. Thorn, the huntresses of Artemis step in and rid of the monster by making him trip off a cliff, which led to the loss of Annabeth, her being on Thorn's back. When Artemis introduces herself, it is unvealed that Grover, like all satyrs, is in love with the goddess, admiring her for her love for nature. Artemis leaves her huntresses to be escorted to Camp Half-Blood by Percy, Grover, and Thalia. It is discovered that soon after that, Artemis is kidnapped, which means that a quest must be launched to save her. That quest consists of Grover, Bianca, Zoe Nightshade, Thalia, and Percy, who journey across the country to Mt. Tampalais, but make side stops along the way. One of these stops happen to be in New Mexico, where Grover believes to feel the power of Pan when pictures of birds fly off of his coffee cup and a rubber rat comes to life. Later, at the end of the story, Grover swears that he hears the voice of Pan telling him "I await you."

[edit] The Battle of the Labyrinth

It is in this book that we meet Juniper, Grover's nymph girlfriend, who is sobbing hysterically as The Council of Cloven Elders' decide that Grover has been searching far too long for the god Pan - they give him a week to find Pan, and if he doesn't, his searcher's license will be revoked. He, Percy, Annabeth and Tyson head into the Labyrinth this time to find its creator, Daedalus, and his workshop. Sometime in the book, Grover and Tyson split up from Percy and Annabeth. However, Grover meets a monster. Later, Grover finds Pan and learns the truth about his disappearance and that he, the God of Wild Things, must fade away and leave the job of making the earth green again to Grover, Annabeth, Percy, Tyson and everyone else on the planet. In the Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover unleashes the cry of Panic, greatly disrupting - but not ending - the Battle.

[edit] The Last Olympian

In this story, Grover has apparently been missing for 2 months, and Percy Jackson alongside Nico Di Angelo decide to look for him on their way to the Underworld. Percy locates Grover through his empathy link in central park and finds him under a giant elm tree. Percy wakes him up by yelling (via empathy link) "FOOD, PANCAKES!". Grover appears in front of Percy and Nico shortly afterwards. He tells them he just took a nap and they figure out that a god put Grover to sleep (Morpheus the god of dreams). In that way, Grover gives Percy and Nico info. that some minor gods are on Kronos' side. He helps Nico and Percy get into the underworld by playing his reed pipes to open up an entrance Orpheus made which is in Central park.

After the battle in New York, Dionysus takes back his exile from camp and promotes him to the council of cloven elders. Then he appoints him the new Lord of the Wild.
