III Corps (German Empire)

The III Army Corps was a corps of the Imperial German Army. It was established in 1814 as the General Command in Berlin (Generalkommando in Berlin) and became the III Army Corps on April 3, 1820. Prior to World War I, its headquarters were in Berlin, but at the beginning of the war it was transferred to the Western Front, leaving a corps rear area in Berlin to handle administrative matters and induction and training of recruits.

Notable commanding generals include Friedrich Graf von Wrangel (1849-1857) and Karl von Bülow (1903-1912).

Its component units in 1914 were:

  • 5th Division
  • 6th Division
  • 3rd (Brandenburg) Jäger Battalion
  • 7th Machine Gun Battalion
  • 3rd (Brandenburg) Pioneer Battalion
  • 2nd Communcations Battalion
  • 3rd Training Battalion
