Mamelodi, part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, is a black township set up by the then apartheid government northeast of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. It was established when 16 houses were built on the farm Vlakfontein in June 1953 and later the name changed to Mamelodi, the name given to president Paul Kruger by the Africans because of his ability to whistle and imitate birds, also meaning Mother of Melodies. In the 1960s black citizens where forcefully removed from the suburb of Lady Selbourne in Pretoria to Mamelodi, Ga-Rankuwa and Atteridgeville.
The township is home to the Mamelodi Sundowns of the ABSA Premier League and the Mamelodi Bees of the South African Women's Basketball League.
Since 2001 Mamelodi has had a large Aids outreach program helping several thousand orphans in the community. Since 2005, through the partnership of Charity and Faith Mission in Mamelodi and Crossroads church in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA), Mamelodi is home to the largest Aids Hospice Center in South Africa with 140 beds available free of charge.
Mamelodi has produced football stars like Themba Mguni and Joel 'Fire' Masilela who where both sported from Mamelod Publican FC by Sundowns.
Mamelodi is sometimes called the home of jazz, not only because of the number of great jazz artist it has produced but because it has played host to many festivals at its Moretele Park.

The biggest diamond in the world was discovered 12 km to the east of Mamelodi at Cullinan. It is the most affluent township in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. It is affectionately known to locals as "Mams" or "Flaka".

Mamelodi is well respected by various affluent townships in Gauteng like, Soweto, Atttregivile, Daveyton and Alexandra. Mamelodi boosted a basket of intellectuals and leading business people in the South African economy, the township has also played a pivotal role central to the liberation struggle of South Africa.
Mamelodi takes a front seat in regards to trend setting behavior, most of consumable goods assosiated to fun and groove are launced in the township. these is merely to a survey findings that Mamelodi sets the trend to the social life of the Gauteng province.
Skinner Boom is a popular land mark of Mamelodi, Skinner boom is an old shop where old timers from politicians, businessmen and academics meet on daily basis to enjoy their single malt whiskey and engage in issues of national importance.
Skinner boom in its members had very well known personalities like the late Human Rights Lawyer Montsho'Sharks' Sefanyetso who revealed the apartheid hit squad responsible for the murder of Dr. Reibero and his wife. The Mamelodi Tycoon Boy Mafa was also a member. and other well know socialites like the late Lariggan Ramasodi, Ramack Kapota, Bally Mabuse and Desmoo Mabusela were also members who held the Mamelodi flag up high in the social circles.
Skinner Boom is still active and existing with members who present Mamelodi as an advance and trend setting township. Significant to the Skinner Boom is its geographical position in Tshoeu street which is also a home to popular sport and dance Clubs Jackbudha and Corner Couch.It is known that it has the biggest hot,chilling spot called Pollar Park.
