The Hanken School of Economics (Swedish: Svenska handelshögskolan, "Hanken") is a business school of university standing located in Helsinki and Vaasa, Finland. The school was founded in 1909 under the name Högre Svenska Handelsläroverket and was given its current name in 1927. Hanken has two campuses, one in Helsinki and one in Vaasa.
In 2000 Hanken was awarded the EQUIS-acreditation by EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development). The accreditation was renewed in 2005 and 2008. Hanken was awarded the AMBA accreditation in 2008[1]. Hanken has also signed the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).
A person studying at Hanken is known in Swedish as hankeit, which is a registered trademark since 2006.[2]

Hanken has six departments: accounting, commercial law, economics, finance and statistics, management and organisation, marketing. The School also has a Centre for Languages and Business Communication.

Hanken offers PhD education within all of its 10 majors. The degree corresponds to four years of full-time study. Approximately one year consists of course work while the remaining part is focused on thesis work.

Hanken MBA is an accredited executive MBA programme. There are different streams within the programme; Finance, International Management and Service and Relationship Marketing. The programme was awarded the AMBA accreditation in 2008.[5] Hanken offers tailor-made courses to companies within the framework of Hanken & IFL Corporate Development. Hanken & IFL Corporate Development was founded in 2005 by Hanken and IFL at Stockholm School of Economics.[6]

Hanken has approximately 70 partner universities for student exchange around the globe. Every year some 100 students from Hanken spend one semester or a full academic year abroad. Hanken also receives approximately 100 exchange students yearly.

The careers service at Hanken, Ekonomforum, supports and offer guidance to students regarding internships and job search. They also arrange company visits, career fairs and the Hanken mentorship programme. In addition to this Ekonomforum also functions as link to companies interested in recruiting Hanken students.[8]

Hanken is a public university.

The Board is the highest decision making body at Hanken. The Rector functions as President of the board. All personnel groups and the students have their own representatives on the Board.

The Rector is elected for 5 years at a time and the Vice Rectors for a period of 2,5 years. Dr. Marianne Stenius is elected Rector for the period 2005-2009. Vice Rectors are Dr. Veronica Liljander and Dr. Sören Kock.

The Teaching and Research Council (TRC) is responsible for leading, developing and evaluating the education and research at Hanken. The first Vice Rector is president of the TRC.

All Hanken graduates are a part of the Hanken alumni network. Today Hanken has some 10,000 alumni working in over 40 countries worldwide. Hanken's alumni activities consist of alumni seminars and alumni days both in Finland and abroad. Hanken also administers an electronic alumni network, which works as a forum for dialogue between the alumni and the school.

[edit] EQUIS
EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) is an international programme for the assessment of European education in economic and business sciences. Hanken was awarded the EQUIS accreditation in 2000. The accreditation was renewed in 2005. The accreditation proves that Hanken meets the highest requirements of quality in teaching, research, internationalisation and co-operation with the business community. Moreover, it indicates that Hanken creates and disseminates knowledge of the highest standard and that Hanken actively collaborates with its surrounding society.

Hanken was awarded the AMBA-accreditation in 2008. The accreditation demonstrates that Hanken MBA holds the highest international standard.

Hanken has as the first university in Finland been accepted as a member to and signed the principles of responsible management education - PRME. The initiative is a part of a call for business schools and academic institutions to keep up with a worldwide corporate responsibility (Corporate Social Responsibility). The principles were presented by a group of researchers and academic organisations in connection to the UN conference UN Global Compact Leaders Summit in July 2007.
