[edit] Otheruses templates

To discuss these templates as a whole, please see: Disambiguation (talk). If you wish to discuss general wordings, rather than the wording or formatting of this specific template, don't post here or else what you say will probably go unnoticed.

For a summary page on how to use these templates, see: Otheruses templates (example usage).

[edit] Generic

For example: {{dablink|For other senses of this term, see [[etc...]]}} . (Note: adaptable, but fails to standardize hatnotes).
Note: similar in usage to the Dablink template, but used for hatnotes that don't make sense on mirrors of Wikipedia, such as linking an article from the main namespace to the Wikipedia namespace. (See: Avoid self-references for more details).

[edit] Otheruses

Note: when used in the main namespace, the word "page" is replaced by "article" in the following hatnotes.

{{About}} is the main template for giving other uses; however, it now redirects to {{otheruses4}}.

  • {{otheruses4|USE1|USE2|PAGE2|USE3|PAGE3|USE4|PAGE4|USE5|PAGE5}} (fully specified)

[edit] Variations

Serving the same purpose are the variations of {{otheruses4}}, or the redirect {{about}}. These are marginally easier to use for each individual purpose; however, because having so many different templates complicates things, it could be argued that the time saved by using them is lost by the time required to learn about them.

The following templates are variations of {{otheruses4}}, or the redirect {{about}}:

Note: {{about}} will produce the same result.
Note: {{about|USE}} will produce the same result.
Note: adds "(disambiguation)" to whatever is input as the PAGE.
Note: {{about|||PAGE}} (with two empty parameters) will produce the same result.
Note: use when there is both a singular and plural disambiguation page. (Only works when the plural is formed by simply adding a "s" at the end)
Note: use when there are two disambiguation pages, such as a noun and an adjective or a singular and irregular plural. There are only two parameters, at least one parameter is required. (This usage cannot be recreated with {{about}}, only with {{dablink}} or {{for}})
Note: {{otheruses4}} with an empty first parameter will produce the same result.
  • {{otheruses8|USE1|PAGE2|PAGE3}}
  • {{This|USE|PAGE}}
Note: {{about|USE||PAGE}} (with one empty parameter) will produce the same result.
Note: same as {{Otheruses4}}, except that it says "section", instead of "article" or "page" and indents only as far as {{Main}} and other section quasi-hatnotes.

[edit] For (other topic)

Both {{for}} (and {{for2}}) can be used, instead of {{otheruses4}} or the redirect {{about}}, to not display: This page is about USE1. This effect can also be achieved by using an empty first parameter in {{otheruses4}} or the redirect {{about}}.

For example: {{For|OTHER TOPIC|PAGE}} is the same as {{otheruses4||OTHER TOPIC|PAGE}} (note empty first parameter).

Also, {{for3}} is somewhat different, appending the word the in its mention of the second parameter, then generating a link, using either the second or (if present) the third parameter, as a parenthetical. Additionally, {{the}} is simply a rendering of {{for3}}, without bothering with the optional first argument.

Note: use when OTHER TOPIC is related to that of the current article and already contains a self-explanatory parenthetical.

[edit] Notes

Do not use subst: with these templates, as that will prevent:

  1. propagating changes as the template is modified; and the
  2. What links here (WLH) listing.

Please do not edit these templates, unless you know what you are doing.

These templates are used in thousands of articles; therefore, changing the syntax could break thousands of articles. If you wish to create or edit a disambiguation or redirection template, first ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is there another template already, that will do this job? Since many disambiguation and redirection templates have already been created, first check: Category:Disambiguation and redirection templates.
  2. Do I really need a new template for this? Will it likely be used on any other articles or should I just use {{dablink}} instead? Before creating a new template, see: Template namespace guideline.
  3. If I change the parameters around on an existing template, do I know what the result will be? Will it break existing uses of the template and if so, can I fix all of the errors? Before making any changes, see: Template test cases.
(This box appears in several articles in Template talk and Wikipedia namespaces.)

[edit] Discussion

For discussion on an old, similar template that now redirects here, see Template talk:Otherusesabout. —Caesura(t) 10:03, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Why "uses"??

Why other "uses", rather than other senses of the term? When people read "other uses", they can easily think it means other uses of the thing the article is about. What are some other uses for an M16 rifle? Etc. Michael Hardy 00:19, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Weirdness

This template displays very weirdly on this page, and I'm not sure why. It seems to display correctly in articles, though, which is all that's important. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 04:15, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

I did deliberately put that on the main template page, Kross, so that people wouldn't freak out when they saw it and rollback or something. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 23:54, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merge

This template should be merged with {{This}} using ParserFunctions, as they output the same thing. So, for instance:

[edit] {{otheruses1}} errors (???)

I just tried to use the otheruses1 template on the page Friendship, and found that it did not function as described on WP:TEMP. I then tried to view its source, and was presented with the source for {{otheruses4}}. Something appears to be wrong. -- Boracay Bill 23:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I can see no evidence of your trial. Perhaps you only did it in preview, such that you are the only one who could see the problem - that's good for the encyclopedia (in that the text of the page remained functional), but bad for troubleshooting.
Perhaps you can copy the relevant text here and try here so that we can see that "it did not function as described" for ourselves?
Perhaps you confused curly braces with square brackets due to a problem with your left shift key, as you did in this edit.
{{otheruses1}} works as described at Wikipedia:Template messages/General, not WP:TEMP.
The source for {{otheruses1}} here does indicate that {{otheruses1}} transcludes {{otheruses4}} with parameter 1 passed through, parameters 2 and 3 discarded, and parameter 4 set to "{{PAGENAME}} (disambiguation)".

Hi Jeff. Thanks for reminding me about this on my talk page -- I had forgotten about this and had neglected to add this page to my watchlist. I went back and redid my attempt to use the otheruses template in the Friendship article and had no problem. I no doubt misunderstood something the first time around and caused myself problems. You no doubt correctly surmised that I saw whatever problem I had last time when previewing the page, so I never saved it, and left no tracks for you to look at. Looks like a fumble on my part. -- Boracay Bill 02:34, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Request to add (the existing) instructions to this template

{{editprotected}} I would like to request the general instructions be added to this template, using the following 3 lines at the bottom (insert the following as it is displayed/rendered, not as the internal code appears):

<noinclude>
{{Otheruses_templates}}
</noinclude>

Either that, or state that the instructions are on this talk page. Without one of these, it becomes difficult to figure out how to use this template and others similar to it. The template itself is silent on this, and it should not be.

I can never remember which version of For, For1 and all the others that are available so that I can determine easily what I want to use in any specific instance; including the existing instructions for using it will help. I'm sure I'm not the only one who isn't sure exactly how to use these, and I had to spend considerable time finding the template containing the instructions, and that's given the fact I knew that the instruction template was there. I don't think it makes sense to exclude the instructions from the template (which is where it should be) or, at least, that the template should state the instructions are here, as at least "a minimum standard of decency." Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) 20:12, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

This template's documentation is editable at Template:Otheruses1/doc. Cheers. --MZMcBride 22:25, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] delete the redlink to a non existent disambiguous page

{{adminhelp}}

Can someone delete the redlink to a non existent disambiguous page, on the top of the page

Thanks Odessaukrain (talk) 19:47, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

That red link is red because the template syntax takes the name of whatever article the template is placed on, and using parser functions, creates a link to that name with (disambiguation) next to it. Thus, for example, if you are at an article named Odessaukrain, and you apply this template, it automatically will create a link to Odessaukrain (disambiguation). Since that page doesn't exist, it will be a red link. For that reason, this template is only applied to articles where a disambiguation page already exists in the form of the page it is applied. Since there is no disambiguation page called "Template:Otheruses1 (disambiguation)" (nor should there be), the template itself shows a red link. That is correct, and there is nothing to delete. I'm not really sure if this will come off as gibberish to you. You need some knowledge of how templates work to get this. But the point is that there's nothing to fix here. It's functioning correctly and the red link is correct. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:19, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Edit and merge this template

{{editprotected}} This template actually transcludes the Otheruses4 template, and:

{{Otheruses1|USE1}} {{Otheruses4|USE1}} Both of these produce the same result.

So, I suggest: (1) editing the code to make it even smaller. ({{Otheruses4|{{{1}}} }})

OR (2) merging this template to Otheruses4, if possible.

Explorer09 (talk) 14:34, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Not done. What exactly is the point of this change? --- RockMFR 01:52, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
